I opened up my aim as usual today, and when aol.com opened, an article caught my eye- "Have we become too casual? Why I dress my kids up for church."
It got me thinking: today's society really is casual in the extreme. In doing a bit of internet research, I have found that I am not alone in thinking this. People, both male and female, wear t-shirts and jeans to church. Fifty years ago, it would not have been appropriate for women or girls to show up in pants, let alone jeans for either gender.
Not too long ago, I saw an old handbook detailing the dress code for my high school, as of 1962 (or thereabouts). Girls were to wear dresses, knee length or longer. Boys were to wear slacks and a collared shirt. This is a public school, it's not like it's private or anything.
However, you should see what people wear to school nowadays. Skintight, ripped, bleached. Bra straps hanging out (which unfortunately, even I am guity of), guys with boxers clearly visible. Clothes that look straight from the hamper. However, my biggest pet peeve is the people who show up to school in pajamas. Do those people even try?
I see people wearing a multitude of inappropriate clothing items. Leggings as pants are one of the most prevalent. Clothing that is too large, too tight, or just all around sloppy. However, even some of the worst, the studded, the tacky, the skintight/bleached/ripped/baggy clothing at least looks like they sort of maybe tried.
The worst and most inappropriate sort of outfit I have seen anyone wear to school was committed by an old friend of mine, who shall remain nameless here. Countless days I would see her show up to school in too small t-shirts emblazoned with names of motorcycle shops or Betty Boop's face, paired with pajama pants, and usually a really tacky bag (think cheetah print, red patent leather, or those horrible bags shaped like corsets). It makes me wonder, did she even try to look presentable for school? Or did she just grab the first thing she saw in the morning and put it on?
My point, however, was that society has become too casual. Recently I have been on that long hard road called the Job Search. When called in for an interview at Borders Books, I was going to wear what I thought was appropriate for a job interview- a black pencil skirt and white button down with black pumps. However, when I told my mother this, she told me it was too formal for a job interview. Was it really? The outfit she suggested- a tropical printed skirt and turquoise tank top with a black cardigan- seemed more fit for being a guest at a casual summer wedding perhaps, or even just to wear on a normal day. My interview was just at Borders, and not a corporation or anything, but I listened to my mother, and I don't exactly have a job yet...
Maybe I'm just too old fashioned for today's society. At least my beliefs are. You won't exactly see me out wearing a skirt and pearls every day, but hey, if it was societally acceptable you better believe that's what I'd be doing. You'd never catch me wearing what I am right now (baggy shorts printed with music notes and a men's XL flannel shirt) out in public. Come on now people, that's just not appropriate.
